Ideas, Inspiration & Resources to Celebrate World Sepsis Day 2024

World Sepsis Day Overview

World Sepsis Day is an annual event dedicated to raising awareness for Sepsis. The first edition of the event was held in 2012 by a charity organization, namely the Global Sepsis Alliance. Since then, this key event is celebrated on the 13th day of September each year. In 2024, it will be celebrated with vigour and high note on the same date as well. The primary objective of the event is to make the world Sepsis free.

As is the case with the previous editions of the event, Sepsis Day 2024 is also expected to convey an important message loud and clear: a heightened awareness of sepsis is the only way to bring down its instances among people. Its timely detection and effective treatment help prevent damage to the body. Consequently, an individual can live a normal life.

The awareness concerning it becomes apparent, given the number of people it affects each year. On average, around 50 million lives suffer from it and it causes 11 million deaths each year globally. These figures speak volumes about the seriousness of sepsis. Still, only a few people know about it.

What is Sepsis?

Sepsis is an autoimmune reaction of the body. It triggers an overreaction of the body’s autoimmune system in response to the entry of a foreign body to protect the latter from infection. But in the process, it starts damaging the tissues and organs. Medical experts also address sepsis as “blood poisoning” or “septicaemia”.

The primary reason for sepsis is an infection, especially the one that is left untreated. Bacterial infections in certain parts of the body such as the gastrointestinal tract, skin, urinary tract, and lungs take the form of sepsis when not treated on time. In most cases, sepsis is not contagious. But some of its infections may pass from one person to the other.
