Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Team Management

Lead, supervise, and manage the CSSD team, including sterilization technicians and staff, to ensure effective and efficient department operations. 

Provide direction, support, and guidance to staff, promoting professional development and ensuring adherence to best practices in sterilization procedures.

Conduct staff performance evaluations, provide feedback, and implement continuous training programs.

  • Sterilization & Decontamination Operations:

Oversee the cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and storage of all medical instruments and equipment used in the hospital.

Supervise the use and maintenance of sterilization equipment such as autoclaves, washer-disinfectors, and sterilization monitoring devices.

Ensure that all sterilization cycles meet required standards and are properly documented.

Develop, implement, and enforce sterilization protocols to ensure the safety of patients and staff.

  • Infection Control & Compliance:

 Ensure compliance with local, national, and international infection control and safety standards (e.g., WHO, CDC, AAMI, ISO).

Monitor and audit sterilization processes to ensure adherence to infection control policies and quality standards.

Work closely with the Infection Control team to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs).

Implement corrective actions and continuous improvement initiatives in response to audit findings or incidents.

  • Inventory & Equipment Management:

 Oversee the management of sterilization supplies, instruments, and equipment, ensuring an adequate supply of consumables (e.g., packaging materials, disinfectants).

Manage inventory and ensure the proper storage, handling, and rotation of sterile goods to maintain quality and safety.

Ensure timely procurement of supplies and negotiate contracts with vendors for sterilization equipment and consumables.

  • Training & Education:

Provide ongoing training and education for CSSD staff on sterilization techniques, infection control practices, and the proper handling of sterilized instruments.

Educate hospital staff, including clinicians, nurses, and surgical teams, on the importance of sterile equipment handling and infection prevention.

Organize and deliver educational programs on the proper use and maintenance of sterilization equipment.

  • Quality Assurance & Process Improvement:

 Develop and implement a robust quality assurance program to ensure the highest level of safety and quality in all sterilization processes.

Conduct regular audits of sterilization processes and maintain thorough documentation to meet regulatory requirements.

Lead efforts to improve efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and enhance the overall performance of the CSSD.

Investigate and resolve incidents or non-compliance with sterilization processes, implementing corrective and preventive actions.

  • Collaboration & Coordination:

 Coordinate with clinical departments such as surgery, radiology, and ICU to ensure timely delivery of sterilized instruments for procedures.

Collaborate with the hospital's infection control, nursing, and quality assurance teams to align sterilization practices with hospital-wide infection prevention efforts.

Maintain effective communication with other departments to ensure smooth workflow, especially in urgent or emergency situations.

  • Regulatory Compliance & Documentation

Ensure all sterilization and decontamination processes comply with healthcare regulations, safety standards, and hospital policies.

Maintain accurate records and documentation related to sterilization cycles, equipment maintenance, staff training, and compliance audits.

Prepare reports on department activities, including performance metrics, quality audits, and compliance status for senior management.

  • Budget & Resource Management:

 Develop and manage the CSSD budget, ensuring efficient use of resources while maintaining high standards of service and safety.

Track and control expenses related to sterilization processes, equipment, and consumables.

Participate in decision-making processes for equipment purchases and cost-effective solutions to improve operational efficiency.

Job Objective

Job Objective - Dedicated & passionate CSSD professional, expert in managing a team to ensure efficient workflow, minimize risks of infection, and maintain a consistent supply of properly sterilized instruments for medical procedures in a hospital setup

Qualification

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Nursing, Health Services Management, Biomedical Engineering, or a related field.

Certification in Sterile Services or Infection Control is highly desirable (e.g., Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician, or similar).

Strong understanding of sterilization techniques, infection control standards, and relevant healthcare regulations
