Pneumonectomy is the technical term used for the surgical removal of the whole lung. Pneumonectomy is done in cases of destroyed lungs due to extensive tuberculosis / bacterial / fungal infections. This surgery is also performed to treat lung cancer when less radical surgery cannot achieve satisfactory results. In case the tumor is located near the center of the lung that involves the major pulmonary artery or veins, this surgery is more appropriate.
