Heart Transplant
Left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a pump used for patients of end-stage heart failure. It is a surgically implanted, a battery-operated, mechanical pump, which helps the left ventricle (main pumping chamber of the heart) pump blood to the rest of the body. Not all patients with end-stage heart failure may be fit for transplantation, or they may have to wait a long time for a heart to become available. In such cases LVADs are used to improve and elongate a patient’s life. LVADs can be used as ‘Bridge-to-transplant therapy’ or ‘Destination therapy’.
A heart transplant is an operation in which a failing heart is replaced with a healthier donor heart. Heart transplant is a treatment that's usually reserved for people whose condition hasn't improved enough with medications or other surgeries. While a heart transplant is a major operation, your chance of survival is very good with appropriate follow-up care.
Coronary artery disease (CAD) is a common heart disease caused by plaque build-up constricting blood supply to the heart muscle. This condition can result in serious complications such as heart attacks, irregular heart rhythms, and even heart failure. In severe cases, it can result in end-stage heart failure that can’t be corrected with stenting or bypass surgery necessitating heart transplant.
Valvular heart disease happens when any valve in the heart gets damaged or diseased valve leaflets from fully opening or closing. There are 4 major types of heart valve disease including stenosis (narrowing of the opening), regurgitation (inability to close), prolapse (stretched out and floppy flaps) and atresia (blocked flow because of unformed valve). In all these conditions, the heart can’t pump blood throughout the body. This can lead to heart failure, sudden cardiac arrest, and even death. When a diseased valve cannot be addressed with surgical replacement, heart transplantation may be recommended.
Adults survivors of congenital heart surgery may face transplantation. This has true for those with atrial switch corrections of transposition of the great arteries. There is also a growing population of adults with congenital heart disease (ACHD). Many of these high-risk patients have end-stage heart failure, and need heart transplantation.
Ventricular arrhythmias is abnormal heart rhythm that affects the lower chambers of your heart, which drive the heart’s ability to pump blood throughout the body. While some arrhythmias are harmless, others can have deadly effects. It is possible to cure some arrhythmia, but in other cases it may need treatment, including medication, implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD), ablation, and in some cases of extreme damage to heart muscles, heart transplantation.
