Medanta hospital becomes the first to offer CAR-T therapy for blood cancer in the region
Lucknow, 22 October, 2024: Medanta Hospital’s Department of Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) has marked a groundbreaking achievement, being the first in Eastern and Central Uttar Pradesh to offer CAR-T cell therapy for refractory blood cancers. Accredited by NABH, the department has successfully performed 52 bone marrow transplants and cellular therapy cases in just 1.5 years since its establishment. This achievement further cements its reputation as a leader in advanced hematological care in the region.
The department, which features a cutting-edge 10-bed BMT unit, can handle autologous and allogeneic bone marrow transplants. Recently, it successfully performed its first CAR-T cell therapy for a leukaemia patient suffering from refractory acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Post-procedure, the patient is now cancer-free, demonstrating the department’s expertise in handling complex cases.
Since its establishment, the department has conducted 24 allogeneic stem cell transplants and 26 autologous stem cell transplants for various cancerous and non-cancerous blood disorders. These include acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (10 cases), acute myeloid leukaemia (8 cases), multiple myeloma (14 cases), aplastic anaemia (5 cases), thalassemia (2 cases), non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (6 cases), and Hodgkin's lymphoma (6 cases).
Dr. Anshul Gupta, Head of the Department of Hematology & BMT at Medanta, Lucknow, shared his pride in the department's success: "We are proud to achieve this milestone in such short duration. Our dedicated team is committed to offering cutting-edge treatments like CAR-T cell therapy and haploidentical bone marrow transplants, bringing hope to patients with complex blood disorders and advancing the fight against blood cancer in Eastern and Central U.P."
The department is the first in Eastern and Central Uttar Pradesh to offer CAR-T cell therapy for refractory blood cancers. It has also completed 10 haploidentical (half-matched) bone marrow transplants with exceptional outcomes.
Accredited by NABH, the Department of Hematology and Oncology (POMT) at Medanta is fully equipped to perform stem cell transplants and offer CAR-T cell therapy, providing a much-needed advanced medical facility for all haematological disorders.
