Medanta elevates advanced Diabetes Treatment Awareness with Vascular Surgery in Kolkata

Kolkata, 19 July 2024 – In a continued effort to enhance healthcare services and emphasize patient education, Medanta, a leading multi-specialty hospital, hosted a press conference to highlight the latest advancements in vascular surgery and its crucial role in preventing amputations and strokes among diabetic patients. Led by Dr Rajiv Parakh, Chairman, Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences at Medanta, Gurugram, the event showcased innovative treatment modalities and the importance of early diagnosis in optimizing patient outcomes. Many people with diabetes, common in India, develop foot infections that can lead to amputations. However, these amputations are preventable with proper management. A blocked blood supply to the leg causes a "leg attack," similar to a "heart attack" or a "brain attack," which can lead to strokes or paralysis. Preventing leg and brain attacks can save lives and avoid severe complications. Peripheral vascular artery disease, influenced by factors such as diabetes, smoking, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, affects many individuals, particularly in regions like West Bengal. According to the 2021 Assocham report on the burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) in India, West Bengal has a significantly higher prevalence of NCDs compared to the national average. Specifically, the prevalence rate of hypertension and diabetes, which are the two leading causes of Peripheral Artery Disease (PAD), is markedly higher in West Bengal. The report shows a hypertension prevalence rate of 5.13% in West Bengal, compared to the national average of 3.6%. Similarly, the prevalence of diabetes in the state is 3.53%, against the national average of 2.85%. While awareness about peripheral vascular artery disease and its causes has improved, there's a pressing need to further educate the public on preventing their progression of vascular diseases and the benefits of early intervention. During the press conference, Dr. Rajiv Parakh highlighted cutting-edge technologies that are transforming vascular surgery. These include the advanced AI guided Penumbra System, which selectively removes blood clots from the lungs to prevent collapse; Genicular Artery Embolization, a minimally invasive procedure that alleviates chronic knee pain by reducing blood flow to inflamed areas; and Prostate Artery Embolization, which treats benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) by shrinking the prostate through restricted blood flow. These advancements have significantly improved the treatment of vascular diseases, in diabetic patients early ballooning or stenting to open blocked arteries can prevent amputation of leg and prevent severe complications and enhancing patient outcomes. Early diagnosis and minimally invasive techniques are essential for optimizing patient care and improving quality of life. Dr Rajiv Parakh, Chairman, Peripheral Vascular and Endovascular Sciences at Medanta, Gurugram stated, “The treatment of vascular diseases, especially in diabetic patients, has seen significant advancements with the introduction of new technologies. Techniques like the Penumbra System and Genicular Artery Embolization have made it possible to significantly improve patient outcomes. Empowering individuals with knowledge about these advancements and stressing the importance of early diagnosis is paramount. Additionally, integrating advanced diagnostic tools and minimally invasive techniques into treatment plays a crucial role in optimizing patient outcomes and improving quality of life.” Aligned with Medanta's vision, such initiatives highlight the hospital's dedication to healthcare excellence and community engagement.
